2016 Beta Reader Sign Up!
May. 1st, 2016 12:45 pm
Most people will already have their own beta reader, but hey, maybe they want to try someone new. A beta reader is a person who reads another person's written work with a critical eye, with the aim of improving grammar, spelling, characterization, and general style of a story before the author posts it up. All participants must get their fiction beta’d by at least one person.
Beta volunteer: Can we get some lovely volunteers to help our writers out? Betas are love, so comment below with the following text! Comments are unscreened.
Need a beta: If you are in need of a beta, then drop a note or just directly contact someone that volunteers below by replying to their comments.

Preferred Fandoms/Pairings: I'm most familiar with Buffy/Angel the Series, Deep Space Nine, Babylon 5, Arrow (through mid-Season 3), the Wire, Community (through Season 5) and Hamilton. I am partly familiar with the MCU (haven't seen all of the movies). I am happy to read other fandoms, so long as you don't need deep canon knowledge from your beta.
Is there any type of fiction you would prefer to avoid beta'ing? non-con, incest.
What are your strengths as a beta reader? grammar/spelling, logistics: (i.e. "You had her dramatically whip off her glasses at the beginning of the scene, and then she does it again at the end of the scene, but she didn't put them back on in the middle of the scene").
What kind of turn around time can someone expect from you? One week for a little bang fic, two weeks for a big bang fic. I'm also happy to read bits and pieces of the fic rather than the whole thing if you want feedback while you write.

Preferred Fandoms/Pairings: I can do pretty much anything Marvel/MCU, Whedonverse, Whoniverse, Broadway-related, or that Mike Schur has some kind of hand in. I tend toward canon-compliant ships (comics or otherwise, in Marvel's case). If you write Bucky/Natasha I will do anything for you.
Is there any type of fiction you would prefer to avoid beta'ing? Bruce/Nat, non/dub-con, kink
What are your strengths as a beta reader? I just finished taking a graduate course on editing, so I actually have a credit from Harvard University that says I know what I'm doing! Also a lifelong grammar Nazi and professional writer/editor, and I've been reading and writing fic for so gosh darn long that I feel like I'm good with characterizations, tropes, etc.
What kind of turn around time can someone expect from you? Roughly two weeks, depending on length and what's going on in real life, but often faster. Check in with me as you go about your process and I can give you a better estimate!

Is there any type of fiction you would prefer to avoid beta'ing? Nope, I'm okay with betaing anything.
What are your strengths as a beta reader? Story flow, characterization, I'm not a native speaker but I can do grammar pretty well, have an English teaching certificate.
What kind of turn around time can someone expect from you? Around a week I suppose.

Date: 2016-05-18 09:12 am (UTC)My main issues are with grammar, words order and "Consecutio temporis" (how come I don't remember if it's called like that in English despite having been studying and reading the language since I was 9 years old?).
If you are interested, let me kno!

Date: 2016-07-18 04:40 am (UTC)The fandom is Being Human, which you haven't listed, but I think it might be almost nice to get an outside view to make sure what I'm writing makes sense if you don't know what's going on. Also grammar/spelling is very important. :)
It is a sequel as well to something I wrote for a previous bang and so it would be great to know if you feel like someone wouldn't understand this without reading that first.
Thank you!
