Hello everyone! Here is the posting guide for this year!
If you have not done the final check-in please do so now!
Final HetBang May Mandatory Check-In
Works are not due just yet, we just wanted to get the posting guidelines up a little early so that everyone can check them out and ask questions if they need to!
The Ao3 Collection will open on May 10th and works will be accepted through May 27th. There will be an announcement once the Ao3 Collection is open. Anyone that has not posted by May 25th, and has not already contacted us to let us know what their status is, will be emailed, just so mods can stay on top of any issues.
Please make sure to read everything and contact us if you have questions, we’re here to help!
General Posting Information
Stories and fanworks are due May 10th through May 27th. May 28th-31st are reserved for mods to do last minute checks and to contact participants in case something needs to be fixed. Works will be revealed on June 1st, at Noon PDT UTC-7.
All works, stories and fanworks, must be posted to Ao3. They must be posted in their entirety and no exceptions will be made to post on a schedule for chaptered works.
If you do not have an Ao3 already, please contact us ASAP!!! We have some invites, so if you need an account, please let us know so you can get one right away! Send a DM to LuciferxDamien or JesterLady on Discord, or an email to thehetbigbang@gmail.com.
Here is this year’s Ao3 Collection:
The Het Big Bang 2019-2020 Ao3 Collection
Editing Your Hidden Work:
Your unrevealed work(s) will not show up on your Dashboard or in “My Works”. If you need to edit, go to either your Profile page and select “Edit My Works”, or go to your Statistics page and select “Edit Works”, then search for the title of the work you need to edit. You can also find your work from the collection works page, only your own work(s) will be visible to you, everyone else’s will say “Mystery Work”. You are free to edit until June 1st, when all stories and fanworks in the collection will be revealed. Once your work is revealed, you are free to post it anywhere else you choose.
Amnesty Day is June 20th. Do not post your work to the collection if you intend to post on Amnesty Day. Please contact us to let us know you’re posting on Amnesty Day!
After posting, you can give the link to your author/fanworker partner, if you have one. They will not be able to view the work until the reveal date, but they can at least add it to their work notes, so that they do not need to go back and add the link in after the reveal.
You can gift your work to your author/fanworker partner, if you have one, but this is optional. You can also gift your work to anyone else you wish! To gift a work, find “Gift this work to” in the “Associations” section and fill out their Ao3 username.
Once works are revealed on June 1st, you’re free to post your stories and fanworks wherever else you want to!
Story Posting Guide
If you're an author that has never used Ao3 before, here is Ao3's guide to posting on the Archive! Please reach out to the mods as well if you require extra help!
To post, go to The Het Big Bang 2019-2020 Ao3 Collection and click on “Post to Collection”. From there, fill out the form with your work, and make sure the “Post to Collections / Challenges” TheHetBigBang2019_2020” filled out. If your work isn’t in the collection, we can’t approve it! You can also post regularly, from the top of the screen and input “TheHetBigBang2019_2020” (without quotes) into “Post to Collections / Challenges” and it will appear in the collection. Once you have everything filled out the way you want, select “Preview”. In the preview window, make sure everything is formatted how you want, and then select “Post” at the bottom!
If you have a large story to post, you can save it as a draft until you have it all uploaded and ready to go. Please make sure to post it once you do have it all up! If it is in draft form, we cannot see the work to approve it! Make sure that all chapters have been posted and are not still in draft form. This is very easy to miss and will cause your work to display as incomplete. This can also cause works to display incorrectly, such as Chapter 4 going to Chapter 6, because Chapter 5 is still in draft form. If mods catch this, we’ll email you letting you know so you can get it fixed in time!
After posting, there should be two banners at the top of your work. The first one is: “Work was successfully posted. It should appear in work listings within the next few minutes. You have submitted your work to the moderated collection 'TheHetBigBang2019-2020'. It will not become a part of the collection until it has been approved by a moderator.” The second banner is: “This work is part of an ongoing challenge and will be revealed soon! You can find details here: TheHetBigBang2019_2020”.
This means your work has entered into the moderation queue and is awaiting mod approval. We will be going through the queue throughout each day to approve works. We will be checking each work for length and completion, and to make sure it isn’t filler text, such as lorem ipsum. (Your hit count may go up!) Only the poster and mods will be able to view the work, to everyone else, it will say “Mystery Work”.
Embedding Fanworks:
If you and your fanworker partner would like to embed their fanwork directly into the story, here are the instructions on how to do so:
Ao3's Image Posting Guidelines. Make sure the url has a file extension, such as .jpg, .png, .gif, etc! Without that, the image will not display. Fanworkers can embed their works into the story as well as make their own Ao3 post, if they wish to do both.
Amnesty Day:
If you need to post on Amnesty Day, June 20h, please let us know ASAP! Do not post your work to the collection if you intend to post on Amnesty Day. Please contact us to let us know you’re posting on Amnesty Day!
Fanworker Posting Guide
All fanworks must be posted to Ao3. Ao3 does not currently have a way to directly upload anything other than text to the site. This means that the fanworks need to be hosted off Ao3 and embedded on Ao3.
Please try to post your fanwork privately if at all possible, so that the fanwork is not revealed early! We’re willing to make some exceptions for fanworks being visible early, or we’re willing to allow fanworkers to be posted on June 1st, so long as the fanworker has contacted us and emailed us a copy of their fanwork by May 27th.
Fanworkers can choose to embed their work into the author’s story only, without creating their own post, or they can choose to just make their own post, or both embed their fanwork into the story and create their own Ao3. We recommend fanworkers make their own post, so they get the attention they deserve as well!
The following list is to help you figure out where to post your works, it’s not meant to be exhaustive.
Imgur allows for private posting, though they do not allow NSFW images.
Twitter does not have a private posting feature, unless you have a protected account with no followers, but Twitter does allow for NSFW works.
Youtube has a private feature for videos and allows for mature videos to be posted.
Tumblr has a workaround for hidden posting. Images can be linked from a post that is in Tumblr’s drafts, effectively hiding your post from the public until you choose to post it, if you wish to post to Tumblr at all. Tumblr no longer allows NSFW works.
Spotify has the option to post public and private playlists. Be default, all playlists are public, to make a playlist private, right click if from the list and select “Make Secret”.
Ao3 Whitelisted Hostsites For more options, here is Ao3’s full list of approved hosting sites!
To Post to Ao3:
If you're a fanworker that has never posted to Ao3 before, here's a quick guide to follow! We recommend using the HTML editor, not the Rich Text editor, as it has a tendency to mess things up. The Ao3 links have the HTML code required to post and instructions on how to use it. If you need help with HTML, please reach out and mods will assist you.
First, make sure to embed your fanwork onto the media hosting site of your choice.
Images, gif sets, etc.:
Ao3’s Image Posting Guidelines. Make sure the url has a file extension, such as .jpg, .png, .gif, etc! Without that, the image will not display. Please reach out to us if you need help with this!
Video, audio, etc.:

If you are posting multiple fanworks and using chapters to separate them, you can save your post as a draft until you have it all uploaded and ready to go.
