Hello everyone!

We want to apologize for dropping off at the end of the Bang in 2020, and for the silence until now. We hope everyone has been staying safe and healthy! We’re excited to get HetBang up and running for 2022, and to help with that, we’ve got a feedback survey and some general announcements!
We’re planning to run the Bang very similar to last time, with a few non-mandatory check-ins, followed by mandatory check-ins, to help us all stay on track. Authors wishing to submit their work for Story Claims will need to turn in a rough draft that is around 80% complete. Mods will not pass this rough draft on to fanworkers, and we encourage authors and fanworkers to discuss what works best for them, i.e. sharing snippets or the rough draft.
Here are a few things we’ve decided on already:
Schedule: We plan to open sign-ups in Spring 2022 and have posting in Fall 2022. Author Sign-Ups will be open for a full month and posting will run for a full month in the fall. A finished schedule will be posted after considering the feedback we receive.
Posting Period: We’ve gotten feedback previously about changing from a single posting day, to spreading out the posting over a few weeks, so that authors and fanworkers get their own time to shine. We have decided to change the posting period to an entire month, which is more in line with other bangs. Posting will take place in either October or November 2022, depending on the feedback we receive.
Shared Mod Account: We’ve decided to move to a shared mod account, to make posting logistics easier, correcting errors, fixing links, etc. Your mods will still be
luciferxdamien and
jesterlady.
Here are some things we’d like your feedback on:
Word Count Minimums: We’re thinking of lowering the word count minimums from 20k down to 15k or 10k for the Big Bang, and 10k down to 5k for the Little Bang. This will be more in line with other Bang-type challenges, and there will be no upper limit for either the Big Bang or the Little Bang. This will also not affect story claims; Big Bang stories will need to be claimed before Little Bang stories.
Chaptered Posting: We’ve gotten feedback about allowing chaptered stories to be posted over time, until they’ve been posted in their entirety. For example, if the posting period is October 1st-31st, and the author has chosen October 27th as their posting date, that author can start posting their story on the 1st, and has until October 27th to have their work posted in its entirety. Please let us know if this change interests you!
Support Communities: The Support Communities were neglected last round and we regret that. Moving forward, we’d like to know how to utilize the Support Comms. Here are some activities we could host:
Block Writing Days: These will be designated blocks of time on a set day of the week, where anyone who has the time can sit down and write their fic! We plan to host multiple times a day to do this, so just hit the blocks that work best for you. Post comments letting us know about your progress and encourage others in their writing!
Discussion Days: A weekly general discussion on your story and progress, whether that be a little or a lot. Talk about your weekly goal, if you have one, what’s working for you, or what’s frustrating you about your story. You can even gush about your fandom/pairing, and why you’re writing your story. Talk about whatever is motivating you to write your story!
Snippet Days: A weekly post to share snippets. It can be a part you’re having trouble with and want help revising, or it can be a piece of writing you’re proud of. The Support Comms are members-only, so feel free to share!
Weekly Word Count Check-Ins: A weekly post to offer encouragement and motivation for writing. This post can also be used for setting a goal for the coming week, if goal setting is something that works for you!
The Support Comms will have a stickied post for finding beta readers and cheerleaders, and offering those services to authors. Anyone that joins the Support Comm will have full posting access, so members can start their own topics as well! We’re also interested in doing motivation posts for fanworkers, too! If there are other activities you’d like to see the mods host, please let us know on the feedback survey.
We’re aware that these types of comms don’t have as much user engagement on DreamWidth and LiveJournal as they used to. There are some perks to using the Support Comms, such as a longer window of engagement, i.e. a post that is a few days old can, and should!, get comments, whereas on a platform like Discord, conversations can move very quickly and it’s less organic to bring up a topic that was discussed a few hours ago. The comms also have more clear organization, and it’s easier to have your own space to talk about your topic in a post. Though DreamWidth and LiveJournal aren’t really optimized for mobile, like Discord is, which can make it more difficult to use the Support Comms. Please let us know your thoughts, it’ll greatly help us in moving forward with the Support Comms!
Your feedback really is valuable to us, it helps us move the community in the direction that participants want. If we don’t know that something is broken, we can’t fix it, so please consider filling out the survey! The survey will be open for two weeks, and then we will be going over the responses to get HetBang 2022 up and rolling!
